Chairman Steil: Democrats are Defunding the Police

October 10, 2025

WASHINGTON - Today, Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (R-WI) joined House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, and Whip Tom Emmer on Day 10 of the Democrat Government Shutdown to discuss the impact on federal law enforcement.

"I chair the Committee on House Administration and work closely with the men and women of the United States Capitol Police, and they're suffering the consequences of the Schumer Shutdown today," said Chairman Steil. "It's particularly concerning at a period of time when political violence is on the rise. Senate Democrats have voted to shut down the federal government seven times - that's seven times to defund our police."

"Chuck Schumer has put politics over people. It's getting better for his politics, he thinks, but it's not better for the people of the United States of America," said Chairman Steil. "We should be standing with the men and women of law enforcement who are doing their job to protect us, and I think it's incredibly unfair and unjust that the men and women of Capitol Police have not received they money they've earned since the start of the Chuck Schumer Shutdown."

Background:

The Committee on House Administration has oversight of the United States Capitol Police. Due to the government shutdown, today, officers did not receive pay for the days they've worked since the beginning of the shutdown.

On September 19, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5371, Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, by a vote of 217 - 212. The legislation then went to the Senate, where it has not been passed.
