New lights shine in Cornell Mall

New lights are shinning above Cornell Mall at The University of New Mexico's central campus. It's part of an ongoing safety initiative by the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico (ASUNM) and the Student Activities Center.

The project includes new string lighting and four large cottonwood tree canopy lights in the area near the Student Health and Counciling building. Support for the Cornell Mall Light Project comes from New Mexico Legislature money secured through a capital outlay project request from ASUNM.

"This project's goal has been and continues to be a visual demonstration of our commitment to student safety and campus beautifying. The increased lighting helps students feel safer when crossing this part of campus at night. It also creates an environment of positive feeling through the rope lights and colored tree lighting," said ASUNM President Andrew Norton.

There will be a celebratory ribbon-cutting Tuesday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cornell Mall.
