Waikomo Stream Bridge on Farrington Highway past Keaʻau Beach is closed due to storm damage

Posted on May 12, 2026 in Highways News, Main, News

HONOLULU - The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is notifying the public of limited access to Waikomo Stream Bridge on Farrington Highway (Route 93) located between Keaʻau Beach Park and Keaʻau Homestead Road.

During post-storm inspection, engineers found that the soil that supports the abutment walls and approach slab have been washed away in areas under the bridge. As of low tide on the evening of Tuesday, May 12, Farrington Highway will be limited to single-lane, local access, via standard passenger vehicles only. Emergency vehicles, oversized/overweight, or commercial vehicles will not be allowed to cross to avoid damage to the bridge.

HDOT has started repairs to the south abutment (the end support of the bridge) and southern approach slab of the bridge on May 12 and expects completion by May 20. These repairs will include installation of sandbags and pumping of grout to fill any voids.

Additional updates will be provided when repairs are complete and if there are changes to access for Farrington Highway across Waikomo Stream Bridge.
