In response to the growing use of electric bicycles, scooters and other micromobility devices across the city, Tempe City Council has formed a new subcommittee focused on enhancing safety and public awareness for these popular transportation options.

According to a study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, injuries related to micromobility devices rose by 127% between 2017 and 2021, with over 77,000 injuries and 129 fatalities reported nationwide.

The Motorized and Electric Mobility Device Safety Council Subcommittee aims to evaluate current conditions and recommend strategies that improve rider safety, reduce injuries and promote equitable access to sustainable mobility. The subcommittee will be chaired by Councilmember Jennifer Adams and Councilmember Berdetta Hodge will be a subcommittee member.

The second meeting for this subcommittee will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. at Tempe City Hall, 31 E. 5th St.
