DeLauro Votes to Open Government

Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) voted in support of funding legislation to reopen the government following a partial lapse in funding that caused a shutdown over the weekend:

"The funding bill passed today ensures that essential agencies can resume operations in service to the American people: the Departments of Defense, Education, Labor, Health and Human Services, State, Treasury, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development will all be fully funded through the end of September.

"Collectively, this bill rejects $163 billion in cuts to public services proposed by the Trump administration. It increases investments in biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health by $415 million and provides over $66 billion for rental assistance.

"To support hardworking parents, we increase funding for Child Care and Head Start by $170 million. We reestablish US global leadership with $5.5 billion in humanitarian assistance, and we put meaningful constraints on the Trump administration's ability to abuse the budget process - reclaiming Congress's power of the purse and reining in Project 2025 author Russ Vought.

"The legislation includes a ten-day flat extension of Homeland Security funding to pay our TSA workers and Coast Guard servicemembers, while ensuring people recovering from disasters can receive assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

"This extension puts Democrats in the strongest possible position to fight for and win the drastic changes required to crack down on lawless agencies within DHS, including ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

"To start, that means de-masking ICE agents, requiring judicial warrants for arrests, ending deportations and detentions of US citizens, and mandatory body cameras for officers. If Republicans do not agree to a bill that includes meaningful reforms by next Friday, Homeland Security will shut down.

"ICE and CBP must be reined in if we are to protect our communities. We must stop the beatings, harassment, and the terror that ICE has unleashed on communities all over the country, and fight for justice for the deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti."
