Senator Marshall’s Office Hosts Wildfire Recovery Roundtable with Agency Leaders & Local Producers

Garden City - On Wednesday, the office of U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas), convened a meeting between Kansas agricultural agency leaders and local farmers and ranchers who lost livestock, hay, grazing stock, and structures to recent fires. Producers from counties across Southwest Kansas filled the Meade County Fairgrounds to ask questions and provide feedback in person, as they work through government program applications to recover some of their losses.

Agriculture agency leaders travelled from across the state to give overviews of available relief programs and take questions directly from producers. Along with state directors, many local FSA and NRCS directors were present as well.

Roundtable participants included:

  • David Schemm, FSA State Executive Director
  • Chad Volkman, NRCS Acting State Conservationist
  • Mike Beam, Kansas Department of Agriculture Secretary
  • Gimmie Jo Jansonius, USDA Rural Development State Director
  • Chris Mullins, Kansas Forest Service Acting Rural Forestry Program Coordinator
  • Bill Waln, Kansas Forest Service State Fire Management Officer

Senator Marshall's office has been fielding questions from producers and assisting in the wildfires that swept across the region on February 17. Senator Marshall was in Southwest Kansas and witnessed the wildfires firsthand. He arrived in Ashland that evening as firefighters and producers worked against strong winds and high fuel loads.
