President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever met in the margins of the European Council today for an exchange of views ahead of the discussion on European competitiveness.
The meeting provided an opportunity to review the results of the video conference they jointly hosted on 10 March with the other leaders who are part of the informal working group on European competitiveness. There was a particular focus on the consequences of the Middle East conflict for the global energy market, as well as on the possible initiatives to be swiftly taken in order to curb the surge in energy prices. The priorities to be jointly promoted regarding simplification, the single market and investments were also discussed.
