National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marina Ragus, and the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Ukraine, Radoslav Milojicic, held a video meeting with members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Ambassador to Serbia, Oleksandr Lytvynenko.
The officials exchanged opinions on current geopolitical developments in Europe and the world, the prospects and importance of Serbia and Ukraine joining the European Union, as well as the possibilities for intensifying interparliamentary cooperation between our two countries.
Marina Ragus stressed that it is a well-known fact that Serbia believes in respecting international law and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of every state, and expressed the expectation that there will soon be a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia followed by good and sustainable peace talks to establish peace and restore normal life, which is of great importance to both peoples.
She also spoke of the difficult situation for Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, who effectively live in ghetto conditions and have no rights to a normal, dignified life. She assessed that EU membership is extremely important for both Serbia and Ukraine, adding that she hopes it will happen in the near future.
Radoslav Milojicic thanked Ukraine for respecting Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and especially for standing by Serbia and international law during the NATO bombing in 1999.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada's Foreign Affairs Committee, Oleksandr Merezhko, stressed that the establishment of peace, but a just peace, based on international law, is a priority for Ukraine. He agreed on the importance of EU membership for both Serbia and Ukraine, particularly emphasising its importance from a security perspective.
The officials agreed that there is room to improve interparliamentary cooperation, through regular communication between the members of the two parliaments' foreign affairs committees and friendship groups.
