CAL FIRE and local fire agencies plan to complete the final phase of the Nelson Road prescribed burn in Vacaville on Tuesday, June 10, starting around 9:30 a.m. The project aims to reduce wildfire risk and improve the health of local grassland and oak woodland ecosystems.
This final 25-acre treatment will bring the total area burned to 95 acres. The site is located just off Nelson Road, south of the Lagoon Valley Road exit from Interstate 80.
Around 45 personnel will be on-site, including seven fire engines, a hand crew, and two water tenders. The operation is carefully planned to meet specific weather, smoke, and safety conditions and may be rescheduled if those conditions aren't met.
This burn is part of a larger fuel reduction effort supported by a CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant awarded to Yolo County Resource Conservation District, with Solano RCD acting as a subcontractor. The land was prioritized by the cities of Vacaville and Fairfield, as well as CAL FIRE, and will continue to be managed for fire safety with a cattle grazing lease beginning in late 2025.
Health officials are advising residents to take precautions during smoke events. That includes staying indoors with windows and doors closed, using an air purifier or recirculating air conditioner, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity, and wearing an N95 mask if you need to go outside.
