Senator Reveals His Office Is Participating In Efforts to Explore Potential 2042 NYC-Lake Placid Bid To Have Highest Level Of Competition Featured At New York's World-Class Facilities

Schumer: Lake Placid Has A Rich Olympic History; We Should Look To Continue That Legacy!

A year after the passage of his legislation honoring the 1980 U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey Team with a Congressional Gold Medal, U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer last week visited Mt Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex to highlight efforts to bring the Winter Olympics back to the North Country. Schumer explained he is involved with new efforts to pursue a bid to host the 2042 Games and said there is no better place than New York State - with its rich sports history and world-class facilities - to host.

"Lake Placid holds a long and special place in Winter Olympic history - having hosted both the 1932 and 1980 Games. Last year, I was proud to sponsor the commemoration of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' Olympic Ice Hockey Team with the Congressional Gold Medal to be displayed right here in Lake Placid. This historic team, made up of amateur players, sparked an explosion of American pride and patriotism when they defeated the vaunted Soviet Union Red Army Team at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games and then beat Finland in the gold medal game," said Senator Schumer. "Lake Placid-NYC Games would mean the highest level of competition featured at our world-class facilities, including Lake Placid's unique alpine and sliding infrastructure. I applaud Governor Hochul's efforts to look at the feasibility of bringing the Games back here, and I am happy to lend my support to those exploratory efforts. I think Lake Placid just might have more miracles to share with the world."

Last year, Schumer introduced and helped lead to passage his legislation honoring the 1980 U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey Team. The team defeated the mighty four-time Olympic champion Soviet Union Team in the semifinal game of the tournament and went on to win a gold medal in a thrilling come-from-behind game against the Finnish National Team. Schumer's legislation celebrates the team's historic victory with a Congressional Gold Medal to recognize their extraordinary achievement, including displaying one of the Congressional Gold Medals at the Lake Placid Olympic Center. Also, in 2016, Schumer visited the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid to launch his successful effort to end the "Victory Tax" that had forced our medal-winning heroes to pay tax to the IRS on the value of their medals and accompanying victory stipends.

Schumer says bringing the Olympics back to Lake Placid and New York would be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to use Lake Placid's top-notch winter sports infrastructure and New York City's iconic stadiums for a modern Olympic Games. As New York State considers bidding on the 2042 Winter Olympic Games, Schumer revealed his office is participating in an exploratory committee to evaluate the feasibility of bringing the Winter Olympics back for a joint New York City-Lake Placid-hosted games, and he wants to support these efforts in any way possible.
