PennDOT to Start Excavation Work for Future Bridge Project

PennDOT to Start Excavation Work for Future Bridge Project

11/15/2024

Clearfield, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a start date of Monday, November 18, for excavation work on an upcoming bridge improvement project along Route 22 in Mifflin County. The project will improve a pair of bridges spanning branches of Long Hollow Run and improve their overall condition ratings.

The first bridge spans a branch of Long Hollow Run near Rhone Road, approximately three miles northwest of Newton Hamilton in Wayne Township. Crews will complete excavation work at this location on Monday, November 18, and Tuesday, November 19.

The second bridge also spans a branch of Long Hollow Run in Wayne Township, approximately two miles southwest of Atkinson Mills. Crews will be excavating this area on Wednesday, November 20. Crews also plan to place erosion and sedimentation controls at both locations on Thursday, November 21.

Flaggers in the roadway will direct traffic through each work zone throughout the week. PennDOT urges drivers to exercise caution, remain alert for construction vehicles entering or exiting the work zone, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up. PennDOT anticipates the contractor finishing excavation work by the end of this week, but all work is weather-dependent.

The excavation work will allow the contractor to pave a temporary road around the bridges once work on the structures begins in the 2025 construction season. PennDOT will issue an update before work on the bridges starts. It anticipates project completion in late August of 2025.

HRI Inc. of State College, PA, is the contractor on this $2.5 million project.
