Inmate Death Notification – John Smith

SAN LUIS (January 22, 2025) - Inmate John Smith, 77, ADCRR #369525, died on January 22, 2025, at Onvida Health Yuma Regional Medical Center.

On January 22, 2025, staff at ASPC-Yuma observed John Smith with injuries consistent with a physical altercation and began life-saving measures in conjunction with medical personnel. Emergency services were contacted, and responding paramedics transported Smith to Onvida Health Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

An investigation is currently being conducted by ADCRR Office of the Inspector General. The Department intends to fully pursue criminal prosecution of suspect(s) identified to be involved in this case. All inmate deaths are investigated in consultation with the county medical examiner's office.

Inmate Smith was admitted to ADCRR custody in 2024 after being sentenced out of Maricopa County for Manslaughter. His assigned housing location was ASPC-Yuma.
