WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11) led a North Carolina delegation meeting with Governor Josh Stein to review ongoing disaster recovery efforts more than a year after Hurricane Helene devastated communities across Western North Carolina.
To date, North Carolina has received approximately $7 billion in federal disaster recovery funding. Nearly $2.9 billion has already been obligated or distributed through federal programs to support infrastructure repairs, recovery projects, and direct assistance for survivors. Before the meeting, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the release of an additional $72 million in Public Assistance (PA) funding and $44.6 million through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).
Congressman Edwards has worked closely with leadership across multiple federal agencies to accelerate recovery efforts and strengthen disaster response. He has also advanced legislative reforms in Congress, including the FEMA Reform Act and the BRIC Act, aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and long-term resilience in disaster recovery programs.
"Since Hurricane Helene struck our mountain communities more than a year ago, securing the resources needed to rebuild has been my top priority,"said Congressman Edwards."Recovery requires coordination at every level of government, and this meeting was an important step in continuing that work. I will remain engaged with state and federal partners to address the infrastructure and recovery challenges still facing Western North Carolina."
Residents who continue to experience difficulties accessing disaster assistance related to Hurricane Helene are encouraged to contact Congressman Edwards' office at 223-FIX-FEMA for help navigating available resources.
