TDS Telecommunications LLC (TDS®) has started work on a major network upgrade project in Kentucky, with construction now active in Hyden, Bledsoe, and Salem. The initial phase of a multi-year upgrade project marks the start of a broader initiative to upgrade the entire TDS network in Kentucky to advanced fiber-optic technology and bring state-of-the-art connectivity to the Bluegrass State.
"We're bridging the digital divide by bringing super-fast internet to the rural areas of our footprint," said TDS Vice President of Corporate Affairs Drew Petersen. "We're excited to make this investment in Kentucky and look forward to having customers experience the new, upgraded service."
The company's Hyden, Bledsoe, and Salem projects are part of a larger effort that will ultimately impact all TDS service areas in the state. Future builds are planned for the Buckhorn, Dwarf, Lewisport, Stinnett, and Wooten areas. The upgrades come thanks to a combination of TDS investment and support from the Federal Communications Commission's Enhanced Alternative Connect America Cost Model (E-ACAM) program.
TDS' fiber infrastructure delivers the same upload and download speeds with up to 8 Gig connections available in some locations. Network construction activity will include hanging and burying fiber-optic cables in utility easements. The new internet speeds will launch to customers in phases as sections of the network are completed. Build work for addresses included in TDS' E-ACAM build will be completed by the end of December 2028.
"This project underscores TDS' long-term commitment to empowering Kentucky communities by delivering advanced internet technology," said Petersen. "The network upgrades are designed to support today's digital needs and anticipate tomorrow's demands."
TDS Connect, the company's low-cost high-speed internet service will continue to be available to those who qualify. The company also recently introduced mobile phone service, TDS Mobile, to all TDS communities.
