UC and UC-AFT Begin Systemwide Contract Negotiations for Instructional Faculty

The University of California and the University Council-American Federation of Teachers have begun negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement covering Non-Senate Instructional faculty across the UC system.

UC-AFT Unit 18 represents more than 5,265 faculty members in titles including Lecturer, Supervisor of Teacher Education, and Coordinator of Field Work. These faculty play a significant role in delivering instruction and supporting students' academic experience across nine UC campuses.

"Instructors play an essential role in delivering high-quality education across the University of California," said Missy Matella, Associate Vice President for Systemwide Employee and Labor Relations. "We look forward to collaborating with UC-AFT to reach an agreement that supports our faculty, our students, and the long-term strength of the University."

During the first bargaining session, the parties exchanged proposals and counterproposals to establish the ground rules governing Unit 18 successor bargaining sessions. Ground Rules are a standard contract article that, when agreed to, help build trust and establish a foundation of mutual respect and professionalism during negotiations. They address topics such as location, technical requirements for virtual negotiations, and how proposals are exchanged and agreed upon. Establishing clear Ground Rules minimizes conflict and paves the way for collaborative, productive bargaining.

UC is focused on reaching a fair and sustainable agreement that supports high-quality instruction, upholds established academic governance and roles, serves students effectively, and strengthens a collaborative, sustainable labor-management relationship that enhances the employee experience.

The parties will meet regularly in the coming months to work toward a mutually beneficial agreement. The next bargaining session is scheduled for March 19. The current contract expires June 30, 2026.
