WASHINGTON, DC - January 8, 2025 - The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) today announced that Clay Seigle, a leading energy industry analyst, has joined CSIS as senior fellow and James R. Schlesinger Chair for Energy and Geopolitics in the Energy Security and Climate Change Program.
"Clay's arrival at CSIS enhances our ability to examine critical intersections between energy markets, geopolitics, and security," said Dr. Joseph Majkut, director of the Energy Security and Climate Change Program. "His deep expertise will ensure that CSIS continues to lead in shaping forward-looking, pragmatic energy policy research and recommendations. We are thrilled to welcome him to the team."
"Our longstanding energy program is a centerpiece of our department's work on the drivers of U.S. economic security in an era of technology competition. Clay's deep understanding of energy markets and energy security will be an asset to CSIS leadership on these issues in the years to come. We are delighted that he is joining our team at a critical time for U.S. economic security policy," said Navin Girishankar, president of the CSIS Economic Security and Technology Department.
The Energy Security and Climate Change (ESCC) Program at CSIS has for decades provided leaders with research and insights to strengthen energy security and respond to global challenges like climate change. The program's work in recent years has emphasized the development of U.S. strategies to secure diverse energy resources and leverage national resources to foster the strategic and economic advancement of the United States and its allies. As part of the newly established Economic Security and Technology Department, the ESCC program is readying for a new era of positive impact on topics ranging from ensuring leadership in artificial intelligence to maintaining stable global energy markets.
Seigle brings to CSIS more than two decades of expertise in market intelligence, global energy security, and political risk. Seigle most recently served as director of Global Oil at Rapidan Energy Group, where he provided expert analysis on oil market forecasts and geopolitical scenarios to diverse stakeholders in government and the private sector. His career spans leadership and analysis roles at prestigious organizations such as Rapidan Energy Group, Vortexa, Genscape, Maxar Technologies, IHS Markit, and Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA). His work has equipped policymakers, investors, and industry leaders with actionable insights to navigate a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
Clay is a dedicated leader in the energy community. He is a board member at the Houston Committee on Foreign Relations and chairs its Finance Committee, and he is a former vice president of the U.S. Association for Energy Economics.
"I'm honored to join CSIS as Senior Fellow and the James R. Schlesinger Chair for Energy and Geopolitics. In a time of unprecedented change in global energy markets, CSIS is uniquely positioned to advance policies that promote security, resilience, and innovation," said Seigle. "I look forward to working alongside Joseph and our outstanding colleagues to deliver impactful research and expand CSIS's engagement with stakeholders in Washington and Houston."
Seigle holds a master's degree in international relations (Middle East) and economics from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a bachelor's degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin.
