Infosecurity Magazine published an article by Abacus Director of Cybersecurity, Travis DeForge, on how what began as a regionally concentrated cyber campaign in Middle East is evolving into a broader, less predictable threat environment being seen across borders, industries and supply chains. He warns that organizations across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific are increasingly facing the effects of politically motivated cyber campaigns, even when they are not direct targets.
The article highlights a shift from traditional financially motivated cybercrime toward disruption-focused attacks carried out by nation-state aligned actors and hacktivist groups. DeForge notes that tactics such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, website disruptions, and information operations are becoming more common as geopolitical conflicts increasingly play out in cyberspace.
As cyber spillover risks grow, DeForge emphasizes the importance of resilience, urging organizations to strengthen preparedness, test incident response capabilities, and recognize that geopolitical events can have additional consequences far beyond their immediate region. He noted, "for organizations in the UK and beyond, the challenge is no longer just awareness, but how to prepare for and withstand attacks that they may not be the direct target, yet still carry significant operational and reputational consequences."
Proactive tools and techniques DeForge recommends includes endpoint and cloud managed detection and response (MDR), phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), Zero Trust strategies, AI-enabled email security and strengthened help desk protocols. He also recommends a two-prong approach to third-party risk management. This includes internal entitlement reviews, applying least-privilege, and time-boxed access, and a concentration on an external supplier-assessment framework that incorporates posture scoring, continuous-monitoring telemetry and contractual breach-notification clauses.
