Residential Fire in the 1100 Block of Castro StreetFirefighters respond to reports of flames in a single-family residencePost Date:07/08/2025 7:38 a.m. On Monday, July 7 at 2:10 p.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting a house fire in the 1100 block of Castro Street. The occupants of the residence self-evacuated before firefighters arrived. Fire units were dispatched at 2:10 p.m. and arrived on the scene at 2:14 p.m. Units arrived to find smoke coming from the attached garage of a single-story home. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with a fire-attack hose line, preventing the fire from spreading further into the house. Firefighters performed an extensive overhaul of the garage by cutting open the walls to ensure complete extinguishment of the flames. The residents received a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency Program. The three adults and one child residents were allowed to return to their home. The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The Mountain View Police Department provided traffic control for two hours while fire units and equipment were on the scene. The origin of the fire was lint in a metal exhaust duct between the dryer and the exterior of the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $50,000. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the use of a 90-degree bend in a dryer exhaust duct must be carefully considered, due to its impact on airflow and lint accumulation. Lint accumulation can create a fire hazard, as lint is highly flammable. Overheating due to restricted airflow can also cause mechanical failures that could trigger a fire.
