Wayne State University for third consecutive year named a top 100 public university in latest U.S. News & World Report ranking

Highest-ever ranking accompanied by best-in-state recognition for social mobility

For the third consecutive year, Wayne State University has retained its ranking as one of the top 100 public universities in the country in the 2027 U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) Best College rankings, which were released Sept. 22, 2026. The university - now ranked at No. 96 - achieved its highest-ever USNWR ranking.

The ranking among public universities is further bolstered by an increase in Wayne State's ranking in social mobility, which rose five spots to No. 57. The ranking recognizes WSU as the social mobility leader in Michigan, highlighting the transformative impact of a Wayne State degree, which puts students from all walks of life ahead of where they started.

"This recognition reflects the quality of the education and experience we provide our students and affirms what we know about Wayne State: that we unite academic excellence with access and opportunity," said Richard Bierschbach, president of Wayne State University. "These rankings are a testament to the talent and accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff, and to the impact they are making in Detroit, throughout Michigan and beyond."

USNWR also named Wayne State as the No. 88 best value school - a new ranking this year among national institutions - for providing the highest academic quality at the lowest cost for in-state students. WSU has the lowest tuition of Michigan's four major research universities. An estimated 60% of incoming first-year students pay no tuition or standard fees through a combination of university, state, federal and other financial aid, and 87% of students receive some form of financial aid.

Wayne State also ranked No. 186 overall among national universities.

The rankings come amid continued momentum and progress at Wayne State, including the university's strongest total enrollment since 2021. WSU also continues to advance research and student success, from the Health Sciences Research Building and emerging school of public health to Student Success 2.0: Every Warrior Rises and Grand Challenges.
