Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University School of Law is proud to host the Kansas Court of Appeals for a special docket on Tuesday, April 14. The proceedings will take place in the Heath Family Appellate Courtroom within Robert J. Dole Hall, giving Washburn students and local community members the chance to experience the court in-person.
The panel of three judges includes Presiding Judge Kathryn Gardner, Judge G. Gordon Atcheson, and Judge Tom Malone, a 1979 graduate of Washburn Law. The panel will hear oral arguments from a pair of cases: State of Kansas v. Landunn D. Richardson and State of Kansas v. Alexandria Megan Houk.
"We're very excited to host the Kansas Court of Appeals for their session," said Jeffrey Jackson, dean, Washburn University School of Law. "Having the Court of Appeals hear cases in our law school provides our students with a great opportunity to see the practice of law in action, and it's one of the benefits for being in the capital city."
Oral arguments begin at 9:30 am, after which the judges will talk and answer questions from students and the public. The Kansas Court of Appeals regularly travels across the state to hear cases. All cases scheduled for the court's 2026 travel docket are available online.
These hearings continue a long tradition of Washburn Law's commitment to educating the community on the judicial process and bolstering students' readiness for legal practice. This event is open to students, faculty and the public.
