AUSTIN ⎯ The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is pleased to announce that Steve Pier has been appointed as the agency's new executive director, effective February 2.
Pier brings nearly three decades of policy and government experience to the role, most recently as the Deputy Executive Director of the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) and the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the State of Texas.
"I deeply appreciate Governor Greg Abbott and the TWC commissioners giving me the opportunity to lead an agency that is vital to our state's economy and Texans' livelihoods," said newly appointed Executive Director Steve Pier. "I look forward to building on TWC's strong foundation of serving Texas' employers and job seekers."
Pier also led the government relations offices at both the Office of Attorney General and TWC, served as a chief of staff in the Texas House of Representatives, and served on multiple political campaigns.
"We at TWC are excited to welcome Steve and utilize his experience of partnerships and strategic vison to further highlight the agency's many effective workforce programs," said TWC Chairman Joe Esparza. "His broad knowledge of governance and Texas' current AI and technology landscape will be an asset to the mission of the Texas Workforce Commission."
After joining DIR in 2019, Pier helped foster solutions for technology, procurement, finance, and human resources issues. He also oversaw key agency functions, including media and government relations, agency risk and compliance, data governance, project management, and customer experience.
"Steve Pier's experience will be invaluable as we continue to adapt our workforce development programs to meet the evolving needs of Texas workers," said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III. "I look forward to working with him to ensure that TWC continues to foster opportunities for all Texans."
Pier has a bachelor's degree from Miami University with a double major in philosophy and political science.
"This is a dynamic and impactful time for our agency and the Texas economy as a whole, and Steve is the right leader to meet this moment," said TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett. "Steve's extensive public service experience, combined with his passion and intellect, will advance TWC to even greater success in our mission of connecting employers with qualified job seekers, fueling the Texas economy."
