Garbage services update!

UPDATE TUESDAY 7/15/25 3PM

As of today, Republic Services has not provided regular waste collection service to City of Fairfield customers for the past two weeks. The disruption is due to ongoing labor negotiations between Republic Services and their local union, which has resulted in a temporary work stoppage by some employees.

City staff remain in regular communication with Republic Services and are sharing updates on the City's social media channels as new information becomes available. For questions or concerns about service delays, residents are advised to contact Republic Services directly at (707) 437-8900.

This morning, Republic informed the City that labor negotiations will continue until 3:00 PM today, with an update expected afterward. While there is still no confirmed date for the resumption of full service, we are asking residents to continue placing their containers out.

To help manage the overflow of household waste, the City has coordinated with Republic to stage large dumpsters at four public drop-off sites. These are available for residents to dispose of household garbage:

  • Allan Witt Park
  • Gold Hill Road
  • Industrial Court / Goldridge
  • Goldhill Road/Cordelia Park

Republic's recovery plan for today (7/15/25) focuses on the following priority areas:

  • Public drop-off sites (listed above)
  • Commercial areas, including the mall and local restaurants
  • Cordelia Business District and Central Way

The City's Public Works - Operations (PW-Ops) team has provided support over the past two days in response to requests for equipment and manpower. On 7/14/25, PW-Ops deployed a front loader and staff to assist with waste overflow at the Allan Witt site. Today, two crews and two loaders were sent to support operations at both Allan Witt and Gold Hill Road.

Republic previously committed to providing security at the drop-off sites to prevent illegal dumping. As of this morning, security guards are present at Allan Witt and Gold Hill Road. The City is continuing discussions with Republic Services this afternoon to ensure 24-hour security coverage at all sites.

The City has contacted various other vendors (debris removal service contractors) and started discussion with other solid waste haulers to take next steps if this issue prolongs.

We appreciate the public's patience as we work through this disruption and will continue to provide updates via all social media platform and City website as new information becomes available.

As we continue communications with Republic Services as they navigate the labor strikes, the City is exploring alternative services to address the current disruption to residential trash collection.
In the meantime, residents are advised to keep their carts curbside and if necessary, may utilize their Blue recycling and Green organics bins for trash.
Once we have more information to share, we will be sure to post updates as they become available.
For more information call Republic Services (707) 437-8900 or Solid Waste Manager Corey Beavers at (707) 428-7528.

  • Thursday Residents: Dunnell Nature Center, 3351 Hillridge Drive
  • Friday Residents: Republic Services, 2901 Industrial Court

  • Residents are asked to dispose of residential waste only.

Please note that certain items are prohibited at drop-off locations and cannot be disposed of through these containers, including but not limited to:

Hazardous Waste - Items such as paint, solvents, batteries, pesticides, and electronics (like TVs and computers).
Appliances - Large items such as refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, and dishwashers.
Bulky Items - Items that exceed normal waste size, including furniture, mattresses, and large yard debris

Potrero Hills Landfill will also be open Sunday for Waste Disposal

In support of our community during the ongoing strikes, Potrero Hills Landfill will be open this Sunday, July 13, to provide disposal services for impacted residents.
The landfill will be open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM to assist those managing waste during this time.

This special opening is intended to help residents with their disposal needs, and there will be no charge for disposal for residents who bring proof of current service with Republic Services for the City of Fairfield and unincorporated Solano County areas.

    Important Notes for Disposal:

All loads must be tarped unless in toters with lids properly secured to prevent wind-blown litter.
Only residential waste will be accepted. Commercial waste is not eligible for this special service.

UPDATE 7/11/25 2:00PM

Strike negotiations by Republic Services workers continue to impact trash collection services in the City of Fairfield, but a recovery plan is in place to resume some residential service starting Monday, July 14.

Here's what to expect starting next week:

  • Crews will focus on areas most in need and critical starting Monday
  • Limited residential pickups will begin Monday, with more coverage Tuesday-Friday
  • Bulky item pickups will resume Monday, starting with missed pickups from last week
  • Commercial customers will begin service next Monday, while prioritizing missed routes from the prior week
  • Commercial routes normally scheduled Tuesday-Friday are anticipated to resume.

Please place your bin at the curb on your regular pickup day next week-even if service is delayed in your area, this will help crews prioritize and catch up more efficiently.

For those in urgent need of trash disposal, we are working on setting up public drop-off locations and will share those details as soon as they're available.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work with Republic Services to restore regular service.
