Mayor O’Connor Announces City Response to Federal Government Shutdown

Today, as the federal government shutdown entered its third week, Mayor Michael O'Connor announced several actions the City of Frederick is taking to support affected residents, workers, and small businesses.

"Behind the political gridlock are families and neighbors who suddenly can't count on a paycheck, small businesses waiting on payments that aren't coming, and communities being asked to do more with less," said Mayor O'Connor. "When Washington stops doing its job, Frederick steps up."

The City's shutdown response includes:

  • Employee Stability: The City will continue paying employees whose positions are supported by federal grants, maintaining stability for them and their families for as long as possible.
  • Emergency Rental Assistance: Non-obligated rental licensing funds are being redirected to provide emergency rental assistance for furloughed federal workers and contractors. The City is partnering with Beyond Shelter to deliver this support quickly and responsibly. More details are available at bsfred.org/need-help/homeless-prevention/.
  • Payment Deferrals: The City is deferring residential water, sewer, and monthly parking payments for verified furloughed workers and contractors with no late fees, no penalties, and flexible repayment options. More details are available at frederickmd.gov/payments.
  • Food Distribution and Resource Fairs: In partnership with Fort Detrick Alliance and Platoon 22, the City's Department of Housing and Human Services will host two Supporting Those Who Serve resource fairs providing food and resources to impacted households.
  • Small Business Assistance: The City's Department of Economic Development has released a guide for businesses impacted by delayed federal payments or contracts, and staff will provide one-on-one assistance to local firms navigating financial disruptions. More details are available at frederickmd.gov/bizresources.

"Local government doesn't walk away when things get hard," said O'Connor. "We show up, we adapt, and we take care of our community. We can't replace the federal government, but we can soften the blow and remind people they're not alone."
