PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER Information and awareness Session on Artificial Intelligence in Parliamentary Work

The Office of the Speaker, on the initiative of the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Affairs Hon. Ray Abela, in collaboration with Prof. Ing. Carl Debono, Prof. Matthew Montebello and Prof. Joel Azzopardi from the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta, hosted an information and awareness session on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a parliamentary context.

Members of Parliament from both sides of the House and parliamentary staff were provided with a practical and comprehensive overview that highlighted the various AI tools currently available and how they can be effectively applied within parliamentary work. The presentation explored current developments in the AI sector and demonstrated how these technologies can enhance legislative processes, support more efficient parliamentary and administrative operations, and expand access to information and innovative digital solutions. Additionally, the session placed strong emphasis on the safeguards required when adopting AI, particularly the need for responsible use, data protection, transparency, and adherence to ethical standards.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia thanked the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Affairs and the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta, reaffirming Parliament's commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in service of the Maltese democratic process.
