Revised: Wrong Way Driver Detection Installation and Activation on Route 8 Northbound at Exit 31 in Waterbury

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing wrong way driver detection installation and activation will occur on Route 8 northbound at Exit 31 (Old Exit 35) in Waterbury. This project is scheduled to occur on Wednesday, December 18 and be completed on December 17, 2025. The project 0170-3638 consists of wrong way driver detection installations and activations across Connecticut. The night work schedule for this project is 7:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m.

The Wrong Way Detection System uses video cameras to detect vehicles that are traveling in the wrong direction. If a vehicle is detected, wrong way signs outlined with multiple sets of red lights are activated and begin flashing to alert the driver they are traveling in the wrong direction. Additionally, the system alerts the CTDOT Highway Operations Center and local State Police Troop barracks in real-time, allowing staff to monitor the activities of the wrong way driver on the ramp.
