ASIRT provides update on Calgary Edworthy Park incident

Shortly before noon, two Calgary Police Service officers conducted a traffic stop on a truck in a parking lot at Edworthy Park. When officers got out of their vehicle, a man walked away from the truck and fled into a nearby dog park.

The officers pursued him. The man turned toward the officers, pointed a gun and fired several rounds, striking and injuring one of the officers. Both officers returned fire, and the man continued to flee.

The Calgary Police Service HAWCS helicopter responded and monitored the man's movements through Edworthy Park, which was occupied by members of the public. The man fired a round toward HAWCS.

He then approached an occupied work truck nearby and forced the person out of the truck at gunpoint. He drove the truck onto railroad tracks, and officers positioned along the tracks fired at him as he drove past.

The man then lost control of the truck, and it became stuck near the tracks. Officers aboard HAWCS saw the man flee on foot toward the Bow River while still carrying the gun. The man entered the river and shot himself. The man was dead when officers on the ground located him a few minutes later.Investigators recovered a handgun from the Bow River the next day, near where officers found the man. The information in this release reflects what ASIRT investigators know at this early stage and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available for release at this time.
