WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) has signed a discharge petition to force a House vote on a plan to fund key Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agencies except for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Office of the Secretary.
DHS has been shut down for more than a month, as House Republicans have failed to move a funding solution forward that includes accountability measures for immigration enforcement.
"My constituents in Ohio's 13th Congressional District rely on disaster response teams, airport security, and the Coast Guard every day, and those services shouldn't be held hostage," Rep. Sykes said. "This bill gets critical parts of government back up and running. Republicans should act quickly with Democrats to pass this bill to save lives."
The legislation would fully fund: Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Disaster Relief Fund (DRF), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), U.S. Coast Guard, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Secret Service, Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC), Science & Technology Directorate (S&T), Office of Inspector General (OIG), and Federal Protective Service.
Rep. Sykes has repeatedly said she will only provide more funding for ICE if basic, common-sense reforms are instituted, such as judicial warrants, body cameras, limits on excessive force, and transparency in enforcement operations.
She renews her call for House Republicans to negotiate in good faith, advance ICE reforms, and pass a DHS funding bill that ends the shutdown.
