The Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will attend the G20 Digital Economy Ministerial Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, from 29 September to 1 October 2025. In 2025, the G20 Presidency is assumed by South Africa.
Minister Ranne will be the first Finnish minister ever to attend the G20 ministerial meeting.
Finland sees the G20 as a key actor in global governance, as its discussions and policies have direct impacts on the rest of the international agenda and cooperation. Over the past two years, Finland has been stepping up its participation in the G20.
"It is an honour to act as an ambassador for Finnish top expertise and promote international cooperation in the field of digitalisation," Minister Ranne says.
"The digital economy and the functioning of the entire society are built on reliable and secure digital connections. Finland has a great deal of expertise, and we are set to contribute to well-functioning connections in every corner of the world. Finland is a partner that can be trusted," says Minister Ranne.
Minister Ranne will attend two separate ministerial meetings on the digital economy and artificial intelligence respectively. She will also attend a high-level seminar on AI and have bilateral meetings during the visit.
The G20 Digital Economy Working Group is a forum for building a global consensus on digitalisation-related issues. The working group was established in 2021, and Finland now participates in its work for the first time.
Apart from the promotion of digital connections, Finland has also supported the advancement of fair artificial intelligence and contributed actively to the discussions on digital public administration.
In addition to its 19 member states, the G20 consists of the EU and the African Union, which was invited to the Group in 2023.
