3/16/2026 - Ocean County Expands Forked River Mountains Preservation Area with 98-Acre Land Acquisition

LACEY TOWNSHIP - Ocean County has completed the acquisition of a 98-acre parcel in the Forked River Mountains, here, furthering the County's longstanding commitment to land preservation and environmental stewardship.

The property will become part of the County's existing preservation holdings in the Forked River Mountains, where the Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Fund currently safeguards more than 12,500 acres of preserved land. Since the program's inception in 1998, Ocean County has invested over $19 million in acquiring and maintaining land in the area.

"The Board of Commissioners is proud to continue expanding preservation efforts in the Forked River Mountains," said Ocean County Commissioner Robert S. Arace, who is a co-liaison to the Natural Lands Trust Fund. "This acquisition strengthens our preservation efforts in the region, protecting the ecological integrity of these forests while expanding opportunities for residents and visitors to experience them."

The 98-acre purchase, finalized for $200,000, allows the County to conduct forestry services on the property, including prescribed burns to reduce the risk of wildfires. The County has also submitted an application with the Pinelands Commission to place a trailhead on an adjacent property to improve public access and hiking opportunities throughout the area.

"Expanding the Forked River Mountains preservation area is about more than just protecting land, it is about safeguarding wildlife habitats, maintaining healthy forest ecosystems, and ensuring these natural treasures remain for future generations," said Ocean County Commissioner Frank Sadeghi, also a co-liaison to the Natural Lands Trust Fund. "We appreciate the continued support from Lacey Township and our community partners as we work together to preserve these important natural resources."

This acquisition builds on previous major efforts to conserve the Forked River Mountains, including the County's purchase of nearly 8,000 acres in 2018 and the donation of more than 3,100 acres from The Nature Conservancy in 2023.

The Ocean County Board of Commissioners continues to advocate for the importance of preserving land across the County, emphasizing the environmental, recreational, and educational benefits of protecting natural areas for current and future generations. Through ongoing initiatives and partnerships, the Board remains committed to expanding the County's network of preserved lands and maintaining the health and accessibility of New Jersey's natural resources.
