Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović met today in Podgorica with Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering in the Office of the Prime Minister of Finland Joakim Strand.
The talks underscored that relations between Montenegro and Finland are friendly and constructive, further strengthened by Finland's accession to NATO and by an active political dialogue in recent years.
Ibrahimović emphasized that Finland's membership is of great importance for the Alliance and the wider Euro-Atlantic community, as it contributes to collective security and stability in Europe. He reaffirmed that Montenegro remains a dedicated and reliable NATO ally, strongly committed to advancing joint security and defence policy.
Turning to the European agenda, Ibrahimović thanked Finland for its consistent support to Montenegro's EU integration, stressing that the country's goal is to maintain reform momentum and close the remaining negotiation chapters by 2026, to be ready for full membership by 2028. He noted that the EU's enlargement policy, through Montenegro's example, can once again demonstrate its value as one of the Union's core policies and a marker of its strength. He particularly highlighted the importance of continuous dialogue with the EU and its member states, as a prerequisite for sustaining open and constructive discussions on all issues relevant to accession.
Minister Strand underlined the excellent state of bilateral relations and expressed confidence that Montenegro's Embassy in Copenhagen will further contribute to their development. He confirmed Finland's strong support for Montenegro's European path, recognizing the significant progress and achievements made so far, especially in the areas of rule of law and democratization. He stressed the importance of a united and strong Europe in the context of current geopolitical challenges, and expressed Finland's readiness to continue providing political and expert support for Montenegro's reform efforts.
The two officials also exchanged views on ways to further intensify bilateral cooperation, with particular focus on the economy, tourism, and energy. They also confirmed their readiness to deepen cooperation through joint activities within multilateral initiatives and forums.
