The Modern Language Association of America (MLA) awarded its 16th Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Studies in Germanic Languages and Literatures to Sean Franzel, professor of German at the University of Missouri, for his book Writing Time: Studies in Serial Literature, 1780-1850 published by Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library.

"Franzel retells German literature's story in its nascent stage, deftly reading canonical texts while reviving influential but often-overlooked works," said the selection committee's citation for Franzel's book. "In so doing, Franzel succeeds in rekindling readers' fascination with the ongoing flow of fiction and nonfiction in all their various forms and gestures toward how we may invigorate this fascination in our age."

The prize - awarded biennially for an outstanding scholarly work on the linguistics or literatures of the Germanic languages - was recently presented during the MLA's annual convention in New Orleans.

"Recognizing Dr. Franzel's work with a prestigious award underscores our focus on supporting our humanities scholars as they ask challenging questions and produce important works to help us better understand ourselves and each other," said Cooper Drury, dean of Mizzou's College of Arts and Science. "We are proud of Dr. Sean Franzel for this recognition of excellence."
