MOST NYC BEACHES WILL CLOSE TO SWIMMING TODAY DUE TO EXPECTED DANGEROUS CONDITIONS

NYC Parks announced that access to water will be prohibited at all City beaches except for Orchard Beach in the Bronx today, Monday, August 3, due to expected hazardous conditions. The sand will remain open for beach visitors.

The National Weather Service predicts a dangerous rip current threat with large breaking waves from 5 to 7 feet, affecting beaches along the East Coast.

The following NYC Parks beaches will be closed for swimming on August 3: Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn; Rockaway Beach in Queens; and Midland Beach, South Beach, Cedar Grove Beach, and Wolfe's Pond Beach on Staten Island.

"The safety of New Yorkers is our top priority. Based on conditions projected by the National Weather Service, NYC Parks is prohibiting water access at all beaches today with the exception of Orchard Beach in the Bronx," said NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura. "We strongly urge all New Yorkers to heed these warnings and not risk their lives by entering the water."

Parks Enforcement Patrol will be posted at beaches to enforce the closure. New Yorkers are advised to adhere to all instructions of Parks staff for their own safety, and to sign up for Notify NYC for updates on beach closures.
