WASHINGTON - Today, the NAACP condemned the Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling in Mullin v. Doe, which states the Trump administration can strip Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from more than 350,000 Haitian immigrants, exposing them to the potential loss of their work permits and or immediate deportation to a country still reeling from multiple crises.

"This ruling is a devastating betrayal of Haitian families who have lived, worked, and contributed to this country for years - only to be cast out based on anti-Black immigration sentiment," said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP. "The Supreme Court has given the green light to deport over 350,000 people, jeopardizing their safety, all while ignoring clear equal protection principles. It's a shame that this is the America we've come to be."

Haiti continues to face widespread gang violence, political instability, and humanitarian crises. The TPS designation ensures people from countries experiencing disasters and crises can live and work in the United States without fear of detention or deportation. The Court's ruling ends that protection for 350,000 Haitian members of our community, leaving families - many of whom have U.S.-born children - facing the loss of their livelihood, separation, and deportation.

"The racial motivation that animated this administration's callous decision to terminate TPS for Haitian nationals in our country is simply undeniable," said Kristen Clarke, NAACP General Counsel. "This decision flies in the face of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which prohibits intentional acts of racial discrimination. At every turn, we see this administration undertaking policy motivated by a toxic combination of racism and xenophobia, intended to dehumanize, diminish, and erase Black people's presence, our political power and our voice. There is no doubt that Supreme Court reform must be a part of our democracy reform agenda."

Haitian TPS holders alone add nearly $6 billion to the economy every year and fill essential jobs in health care, agriculture, and manufacturing, and an estimated 25,000 U.S. citizen children will be pushed into poverty if their parents lose the right to work. Our country is weaker, poorer, and more vulnerable because of this decision.

The Trump Administration is responsible for the devastating consequences of this decision, but Congress has the ability to reverse it and should immediately pass a permanent pathway to citizenship for TPS holders. We cannot allow our neighbors, friends, and family, people who have lived, worked, and raised families here for years to be ripped from our communities. We call on every member of Congress to take immediate action to protect these vital members of our country.
