500,000 customer restorations powered by Ameren Missouri smart switches

More than 2,150 devices help reduce outage impacts across the company's service territory

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 15, 2026) - Smart switch technology installed through Ameren Missouri's Smart Energy Plan has restored service more than half a million times during major storms since 2021. The milestone demonstrates how investments in a more reliable electric grid are delivering direct benefits for customers when storm damage impacts their local grid.

Smart switches are automated devices that continually monitor the grid, detect disruptions and isolate damaged sections of the system. The devices can also reroute power and restore service to customers outside the damaged area.

For customers, the technology can turn what might have been an extended outage into a brief interruption or momentary flicker, restoring power within minutes or even seconds.

"This is meaningful because each restoration represents a customer, family or business that avoided a potentially longer outage," said Jackie Becker, vice president of energy delivery for Ameren Missouri. "These Smart Energy Plan investments are reducing the impact of severe weather and helping our crews focus their efforts where repairs are needed most."

Smart switches by the numbers

  • More than 500,000 customer restorations after major storms since 2021.
  • More than 150,000 customer restorations after major storms in both 2025 and 2026.
  • Recent large restoration events include:
    • Aug. 12, 2026 - 22,000 customers restored by smart switches.
    • July 4, 2026 - 30,000 customers restored by smart switches.
    • April 27, 2026 - 34,000 customers restored by smart switches.
  • More than 2,150 smart switch devices have been installed through the Smart Energy Plan.
  • Smart switches and associated grid upgrades can increase reliability by up to 40%.

Smart switch technology also works to limit everyday disruptions, such as damage caused by vehicles, so the customer benefit extends beyond the storm milestone. While no technology can prevent all damage or outages, smart switches help reduce those impacts on customers.

"Storm restoration will always depend on skilled employees working safely in difficult conditions," Becker said. "Smart technology supports that work by helping identify damaged areas and limiting the number of customers affected while crews safely assess damage and make repairs."

Smart switches are one part of Ameren Missouri's broader Smart Energy Plan, which is modernizing the electric grid to support reliability and resiliency. Other investments include stronger composite poles, storm-hardened power lines and upgraded substations.
