Denver and Jefferson County - The Colorado Department of Transportation and prime contractor, Hamon Infrastructure, have completed installing 3.5 miles of new noise walls along Interstate 70 between Pecos Street and I-76. This project was the second of two phases, the first of which replaced one mile of noise walls between Tennyson Street and Lowell Boulevard in 2022.
Crews began the second phase of construction in March of 2024, removing deteriorating timber noise wall structures and replacing them with new concrete panels. Walls in both east and westbound directions of I-70 were upgraded. The project team also replaced and modernized guardrails and concrete barriers in sections along the interstate as well as made regrading and landscape improvements. This phase of the project was anticipated to be complete in the fall of 2026, but crews worked efficiently to complete construction nearly a year ahead of schedule.
"Delivering this project phase ahead of schedule reflects the hard work and efficiency of our teams. For the communities along this I-70 corridor, these new concrete walls mean relief from noise pollution and the confidence of a more stable safety barrier," said Jessica Myklebust, Regional Transportation Director of Region 1. "We are proud to deliver this key improvement to residents of our region."
While construction of the project is substantially complete, final clean-up operations will continue throughout December and crews will return in the spring of 2026 to complete landscaping efforts. No significant impacts to the traveling public are anticipated.
Map showing areas of completed noise wall replacements, including the first phase (marked in blue) and second phase (marked in green) sections. The new noise walls will help to reduce traffic-related noise pollution for residents and businesses along the I-70 corridor and improve the overall aesthetic of the highway area. Concrete noise panels, as opposed to the previous timber structures, have greater durability and will provide more effective noise mitigation for years to come.
