Van Buren County Sheriff News Release -[Scam Text Messages]

Nature of Incident:

Ongoing Scam Text Messages

Date and Time:

June 10, 2025 at approximately 1200 hours

Narrative:

Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott reports that citizens have been receiving unsolicited text messages from various phone numbers that are requesting the recipients to pay for unpaid fines, with a link provided to pay the fine. The message states, in part, "Michigan State Department of Vehicles(DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on June 11." The message proceeds to provide the recipient with potential penalties if they do not respond by paying the fine. This is an ongoing scam. Sheriff Abbott would like to remind the public that the Sheriff's Office does not request payment via telephone or text message. Please use caution if you receive any unsolicited text message or phone call that requests you provide any personal identifying information or payment for anything you are not expecting. Never click on links provided in unsolicited text messages.
