520 Area Code Exhaust Pushed Back to Q2, 2030

Dec 12, 2025, 10:31 by Nicole Garcia

Phoenix, Ariz. - With new telephone numbers in high demand, Utilities Division Staff of the Arizona Corporation Commission is monitoring the utilization of phone numbers in the 520 area code closely to forestall the exhaust of available resources. Staff has worked with providers of voice service in the State of Arizona to reduce requests out of the 520 area code. The results of Staff's efforts can be seen in a recent forecast report by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA). This recent report shows that since the Staff's efforts began in late 2023, the potential exhaust date of the 520 area code in southern Arizona has been pushed back from early 2027 to 2030. Commission Staff will continue to monitor the 520 area code to ensure that Arizonans' numbering resources are being used responsibly.

NANPA manages area code exhaustion projections and works with state regulators, like the Arizona Corporation Commission, and telecommunication companies on implementing relief plans as the available numbers get low. The 520 area code was established in 1995, as a split from the original Arizona area code 602.
