The United States reaffirmed, on Wednesday, its "recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara" and its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as "the only basis for a just and lasting solution" to this dispute.

"The United States recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara," said U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Mr. Christopher Landau during a press conference following his meeting in Rabat with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Mr. Nasser Bourita.

During his talks with Mr. Bourita, Landau also reiterated the continuous support of the U.S. for "Morocco's serious, credible and realistic autonomy proposal," which he described as "the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the territorial dispute over the Sahara."

In a similar vein, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State underlined during this meeting "the support of the United States for American companies that wish to invest and do business in the Sahara."

The U.S. official also stressed that "the United States is actively working with the UN and all parties, within the framework of the latest Security Council resolution (Resolution 2797) toward a mutually acceptable solution that guarantees dignity and equal opportunity for all," adding that the solution "cannot wait indefinitely."
