The Spring 2026 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grades Rank Virginia Second Among States with 59.2 Percent of Virginia Hospitals Earning "A" Grades in the Bi-Annual Ratings of General Acute Care Hospitals Across the Nation
RICHMOND, VA - The effort Virginia hospitals devote to promoting patient safety is being recognized in a new national assessment by the Leapfrog Group, whose Spring 2026 Hospital Safety Grades rank Virginia second overall among states for top hospital patient safety performance.
Virginia hospitals have consistently been top performers in the bi-annual rankings from the Leapfrog Group. For the Spring 2026 period, 59.2 percent of Virginia hospitals evaluated by the Leapfrog Group received an "A" grade, which ranked second overall among states. Virginia also ranked second overall among states in the Fall 2025 ratings. The Commonwealth previously ranked fifth overall in the Spring 2025 rankings and second in the Fall 2024, Spring 2024, Fall 2023, Fall 2022, and the Spring 2022 periods. The Commonwealth was first overall in the Fall 2021 rankings, fourth in Spring 2021, sixth in Fall 2020, third in Fall 2019, second in Spring 2019, third in Fall 2018, and fifth in Spring 2018.

Year-after-year, results from the Leapfrog Group rating Virginia as a top state in the bi-annual Hospital Safety Grade national rankings show that our hospitals are committed to the work of continuous improvement to better serve patients and families."
The Hospital Safety Grade program assigns letter grades to general acute care hospitals across the nation based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Group, and other sources. In the latest rankings, 40 of 69 Virginia private general acute care hospitals evaluated received an "A" grade. The current "A" rated Virginia private acute care hospitals are listed below.
