Lincoln’s School Counseling Program Earns National American School Counselor Association Recognition

Kimberly Connor, Lincoln University professor of education and program administrator for the Master of Education in school counseling program, recently accepted an American School Counselor Association Recognition Award on behalf of the University's School of Education during the ASCA Conference on July 14.

The award recognizes Lincoln's Master of Education in school counseling program, which earned ASCA Recognition for School Counselor Preparation Programs in December 2025. The distinction placed Lincoln among only seven programs nationwide to achieve the recognition at the time.

ASCA recognition affirms Lincoln University's commitment to national professional standards, academic excellence and the preparation of highly qualified school counselors. Through engaging coursework, supervised internships and field experiences, students develop the knowledge and skills needed to serve students effectively and apply national best practices in their careers.

Programs seeking ASCA recognition must complete a rigorous review process and provide evidence that they meet the ASCA School Counselor Preparation Program Standards. Program reports are reviewed by three ASCA-trained reviewers who are school counselor faculty members with doctoral degrees.

Lincoln's M.Ed. in school counseling program is designed for students seeking to serve as K-12 school counselors. The 42-hour graduate program provides training to prepare graduates for employment at the elementary, middle and high school levels. The program aligns with requirements established by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and is accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation.

The recognition comes as Lincoln University prepares to begin a new semester in the newly renovated Martin Luther King Hall. Updated classrooms, technology and enhanced resources are designed to support graduate learning, collaboration and professional preparation. The improvements also support interactive instruction, case analysis and program planning that connect graduate study to the day-to-day responsibilities of school counselors.
