WASHINGTON - Seth Appleton, President of U.S. Mortgage Insurers (USMI), released the following statement regarding U.S. Federal Housing's (FHFA) final rule on 2026-2028 Enterprise Housing Goals:
"The 2026-2028 Enterprise Housing Goals final rule appropriately balances FHFA's housing goals and reducing regulatory burdens and complexity, while ensuring that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the GSEs) can continue to broadly serve middle- and working-class families, including homebuyers without large cash down payments. USMI supports FHFA in its efforts to promote a clear, consistent, and coordinated federal housing policy that ensures a safe and sound housing finance system while facilitating affordability and accessibility for prospective homebuyers. FHFA's housing goal thresholds have merit given the current challenges facing homeownership in the U.S. are primarily driven by supply, as opposed to driven by demand."
"Private mortgage insurance (MI) enables working-class homebuyers to bring tens of thousands of dollars less to the closing table and still qualify for affordable and sustainable home financing many years sooner than they would otherwise. Private MI paid monthly by the borrower is a small, temporary cost that has declined 25% in recent years, at a time when other homeownership costs have significantly risen. We look forward to continuing to partner with FHFA and the GSEs to enable borrowers to achieve the American Dream of homeownership sooner and deploying dedicated private capital to protect lenders, the GSEs, investors, and taxpayers from first-loss risk associated with mortgage defaults."
USMI previously submitted a comment in response to FHFA's proposed rule on 2026-2028 Enterprise Housing Goals, which can be found here.
