Washington, D.C. - Representative Dave Min (CA-47) released the following statement after 700 Marines, who stopped overnight at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, were deployed to Los Angeles:
"President Trump's deployment of US Marines on American soil is unnecessary, dangerous, and carries deep authoritarian overtones. Local and state police have proven to be quite capable of handling the agitators who are using peaceful protests as an excuse to engage in criminal behavior. Deploying military personnel into a major American city creates an incredibly dangerous situation where the safety of Californians exercising their Constitutionally protected rights may be threatened.
Furthermore, there is no valid legal justification for Trump's violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, which restricts the deployment of military forces for domestic purposes. We are not at war and we are not facing a military invasion.
Finally, this outrageous and potentially illegal deployment of U.S. Marines will cost over $130 million, an unacceptable waste of taxpayer money at a time when the Trump administration is seeking to cut lifeline programs like SNAP and other food aid.
I call on the Trump administration to abandon this reckless path of deploying troops in American cities.
Given reports that Marines stopped overnight at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach for deployment to Los Angeles, our office is closely monitoring this situation and has requested answers from the Department of Defense. Public safety is my highest priority, and I continue to call for peaceful protests and de-escalation."
