Text Message Scam Alert

SCAM ALERT

Texting scams are firing up again.

The Linn County Treasurer's Office has received multiple reports from the public about phishing texts pretending to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles claiming the person owes tolls or fees and that enforcement penalties will begin soon if not paid immediately.

These texts are scams.

Remember - the Iowa DOT or DMV will never text you saying you owe money. If you receive one of these texts:

  • DO NOT click on any links or provide personal or credit card information.
  • DO NOT reply to the message.
  • Verify it's fake by visiting official sites ending in ".gov"
  • Report unwanted text messages by using your phone's "report junk" option or by forwarding the text to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Delete the message.
