America's POWs & MIAs to be Honored in Recognition Day Ceremony

OCALA, Fla. - Marion County will honor the courage, sacrifice and service of America's Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action during a special POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2026 at the Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park.

The remembrance will provide an opportunity for the community to come together to honor those who endured captivity and those who never returned home, while recognizing the families and loved ones who continue to carry their stories.

This year's program, "Voices of Captivity," presented by Marion County Veterans Services, will feature poetry written by prisoners of war and brought to life through readings by members of the Marion County Public Library System. Through the words of those who experienced captivity firsthand, the program will offer a deep personal perspective on the resilience, hope and humanity of those who endured unimaginable circumstances.

Music will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m., provided by Drumming for Veterans, setting a reflective tone ahead of the ceremony.

The Belleview High School AFJROTC will participate in the remembrance by posting and retiring the colors and presenting the traditional POW/MIA Table, a solemn reminder of the Americans who are still missing and the nation's enduring commitment to bringing them home.

"We should never forget our POWs and those who are still missing in action," said Daisy Diaz, Director of Marion County Veterans Services. "Their sacrifice deserves to be remembered and honored, not just on this day, but every day. As a community, we have a responsibility to keep their stories alive and to never forget those who have yet to come home."

Community members are encouraged to attend and join Marion County in this meaningful remembrance. The ceremony will serve not only as a tribute to America's POWs and MIAs, but also as a reminder that their service, sacrifice and stories will never be forgotten.
