The City of Lakewood has proclaimed Sept. 25 as Dolly Parton Day, honoring the life and legacy of the legendary entertainer and philanthropist, who died Aug. 25 at age 80.
The date - 9/25 - is a fitting nod to Parton's famous song "9 to 5."
While Dolly Parton was known worldwide for her legendary music career, her impact reached far beyond the stage.
Throughout her life, Parton put her values into action through extraordinary generosity. She supported health care, disaster relief and communities in need. She was especially known for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, the literacy program she founded to provide millions of free books to young children and inspire a lifelong love of reading.
She was also widely admired for her warmth, humor, humility, kindness and ability to connect with people across generations, backgrounds and viewpoints.
On Sept. 25, Lakewood residents are encouraged to honor her legacy by following her example: help a neighbor, support a good cause, do something kind for someone who needs it or simply find a way to lift someone up.
