The City of Greensboro continues to respond to significant winter weather impacts following a week of consecutive snow and ice events. In addition to last weekend's sleet and ice, the City received 10.3 inches of snow this weekend, marking the fifth snowiest single day in Greensboro's recorded history.
City staff acknowledge the ongoing impacts to daily travel and essential services and appreciate the community's patience as crews work to restore conditions across the city. Snow and ice response crews made substantial progress today, Sunday, February 1, on Priority 1 roadways and will continue working toward restoring conditions to normal as quickly and safely as possible.
All 1,180 miles of Priority 1 roads have been plowed multiple times, and approximately 80 percent of those roadways are mostly cleared of snow and ice. Crews continue working toward bare pavement conditions, while the remaining 20 percent of Priority 1 roads remain icy and are being actively treated. Crews began plowing and treating Priority 2 roads today and will continue working overnight and into tomorrow.
All White Flag warming locations have been plowed and treated. Parking lots and sidewalks at recreation centers and libraries are approximately 90 percent cleared. In the downtown area, approximately 80 percent of streets and sidewalks have bare pavement conditions.
Trash and recycling collection scheduled for Monday, February 2, has been postponed. Solid Waste & Recycling crews will work to complete these collections as conditions allow and will continue working throughout the week to complete any delayed collections.
Emergency response on Saturday, January 31, included 457 to the Greensboro Police Department, 119 calls to the Greensboro Fire Department, and 293 calls to EMS. In addition, there were 797 calls to 911 and 467 non-emergency calls.
The City continues to urge residents to avoid travel when possible and to allow crews the space and time needed to safely complete cleanup operations. Updates will continue to be shared through the City's official social media channels and website, https://www.greensboro-nc.gov.
