January 2025 - VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) are proud to announce the official launch of the AI Maturity in Education Scan (AIMES), a groundbreaking tool designed to enhance AI literacy in Higher Education.
AIMES provides teachers, programme directors, and faculty board members with structured, practical guidance to confidently and ethically integrate AI into their work, regardless of their current AI literacy.
Addressing Educators' Concerns
Artificial intelligence is reshaping education, bringing both exciting opportunities and challenges that can feel overwhelming for educators. Luuk Terbeek, the project leader of AIMES, notes, "Educators often feel uncertain about how to approach AI in education. To prepare students for a future where AI is everywhere, educators need the skills to use these technologies responsibly. That's why we created this tool."
How AIMES Works
AIMES offers three tailored surveys for teachers, programme directors, and faculty board members. Each survey takes just 5-10 minutes to complete and provides:
Built for responsible AI integration
AIMES is built on the EU's Key Requirements for Trustworthy AI, prioritizing transparency, privacy, and societal well-being. The tool is updated twice a year to reflect the latest developments in AI and education. Developed through collaboration with an international expert panel, AIMES includes numerous references, including recent reports from UNESCO and OECD. Additionally, a student survey will be added in June 2025.
