WEEKEND SERVICE SUSPENSION UPDATE: Blue Line Weekend Service Suspension Extended: Service Suspended Between Bowdoin and Orient Heights This Weekend, January 24 – 25

The MBTA is today updating riders that this weekend's planned Blue Line service suspension will be extended and take place between Bowdoin and Orient Heights (instead of Airport) due to upcoming frigid weather forecasts. Extending to Orient Heights allows Operations Control Center personnel to better manage switch infrastructure during extremely cold temperatures.

This weekend, the MBTA will perform tunnel inspections on the Blue Line between Bowdoin and Orient Heights. Proactive inspections are a critical and necessary part of maintaining the integrity of the system.

Riders can find complete information at mbta.com/BlueLine. More information on these service changes and alternate travel options is below:

  • Free and accessible shuttle buses will make stops at Orient Heights, Wood Island, Airport, Maverick, and Haymarket on the Green and Orange lines.
  • There will be no direct shuttle bus service to/from Bowdoin, Government Center, State, or Aquarium.
    • Bowdoin is 0.3 miles (or about a six-minute walk) from Haymarket and Aquarium is 0.4 miles (or about a nine-minute walk) from Haymarket.
  • Accessible van service will be available for direct service to Government, Haymarket, Aquarium, and State. The accessible van can be requested by MBTA personnel or by a station call box.
  • The East Boston Ferry will operate and be free during this service change.
    • On Saturday, the ferry will operate from 6 AM to 10 PM.
    • On Sunday, the ferry will operate from 6 AM to 9 PM.
    • The ferry will depart from each terminus point every 30 minutes.
    • Schedules are available at mbta.com/EastBostonFerry.
  • Riders using shuttle buses should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider traveling downtown from Wonderland should budget at least an additional 30 - 40 minutes of travel in additional to their regular commute.
  • There will be free fares with the fare gates open at Orient Heights, Suffolk Downs, Beachmont, Revere Beach, and Wonderland.

More information is also available through in-station signage and public announcements. Transit Ambassadors and MBTA staff will be available on-site to offer information and assistance during these service changes. Riders are encouraged to subscribe to T-Alerts or to follow the MBTA on X @MBTA for up-to-date service information.
