UIW Fashion Graduate Daniel Williams

UIW Fashion Graduate Daniel Williams

The UIW School of Media and Design's fashion program has the privilege of educating visionary creatives who have a passion for designing, crafting and merchandising the next influential styles. With concentrations including Merchandising and Apparel Production and Design, students in these specializations immerse themselves in the knowledge necessary to succeed in various fashion-related career paths.

One of these remarkable Fashion students is Fall 2025 graduate and Fashion Merchandising major Daniel "Dan" Williams.

Williams has always been surrounded by individuals with unique and dazzling fashion sense. From his mother's statement ensembles to his brother's fondness for streetwear, Williams has always had fashionable role models that demonstrated a love for self-expression through apparel. That same love was instilled in him, along with a desire to learn more about the industry that is so prevalent in his family and everyday life, ultimately he was inspired to pursue a career in Fashion at UIW.

"What I have enjoyed the most (about my field) is learning about the many layers and facets within the fashion world and industry," noted Williams. "Not only have I been able to study subjects like global sourcing, brand expansion and patternmaking, but I've also gained a better understanding of how things in the industry actually work. Being able to express myself and my emotions through design and creativity has made being a Fashion major even more rewarding, especially as it allows me to bring my own style and perspective into my work."

Williams has been involved in a number of fashion shows and other fashion-related events hosted by UIW, often leading the fashion shows themselves. Through these opportunities, he's been grateful to connect with other creatives and people within the UIW community as they showcase their own original designs, leaving their mark at the institution. Each show demonstrated to Williams his growing capabilities, showcasing his personal and professional growth.

A show that holds immense significance to Williams was his third show titled "Cygne Noir (Black Swan)," hosted in observance of Black History Month and inspired by Black Swan. He faced a lot of challenges with the show prior to Cygne Noir, but that didn't hinder him from pouring his heart, soul and passion into this one. Although the experience pushed him to his limits, it simultaneously reminded him of his resilience, creativity and disposition to find the brighter parts of difficult moments. To him, Cygne Noir remains a demonstration of some of his most valued qualities.

"Being part of these events has been a way to leave my mark, inspire others and create something memorable that reflects both my vision and the collaborative effort of everyone involved. There's nothing quite like the thrill of seeing your designs come to life on the runway and feeling the energy of the audience as your work is showcased," reflected Williams.

Williams shared that in addition to providing necessary knowledge about fashion, he appreciated that UIW's Fashion professors have been honest about the industry and what can be expected. Due to their perspectives and insights, he was able to pick up helpful skills like patternmaking and computer-aided design, which he noted have been essential in his growth as a designer. His growth hasn't gone unnoticed by his mentors, and many will miss his face here at the Nest.

"Dan, Congratulations on your graduation," shared Fashion Management Professor Dr. Melinda Adams. "I am so very proud of how far you have come since I first had you in Apparel Construction. I know you have a bright future ahead, and I can't wait to see what you accomplish."

Williams will officially cross the Commencement stage on Saturday, Dec. 13, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Fashion Management. Once he has graduated, he will continue to develop his next collection of vibrant designs and coordinate a new show to share them with his community. He also aspires to return to school one day to earn his Masters.

Before Williams embarks on his next journey, he leaves this final message:

"UIW, I am forever grateful for everything this University and community have taught me. The personal growth, the experiences and the memories will always have a special place in my heart. UIW will always be home, and I hope to one day give back to the community that raised me and gave me a space to express myself and be fully me. To those still working toward graduation: continue to work hard and persist in everything you do, and always give yourself grace when things get rough, you will thank yourself later. I've always lived by the saying 'Relax, Relate, Release,' and I encourage everyone to put their best foot forward while remembering to take care of themselves along the way.

-Dan, signing out"

Congratulations, Dan Williams!
