Internet and Social Media Safety Workshop

How online activity can put your child in harm's way

The Ventura Police Department invites residents to a free Internet Safety Workshop focused on protecting children from online predators.

Tailored for adults, this one-hour workshop will pull back the curtain on the digital world to reveal what's really happening online-and what parents can do to keep their children and teens safe.

The workshop will cover how online predators gain access to children through popular apps and games, explore social media trends and hidden features that many parents may overlook, and present real case studies of local online exploitation. Attendees will also learn about the emerging risks posed by artificial intelligence and deepfakes in the digital landscape.

"If you think you know social media, you don't-not the way predators, scammers, and bad actors use it," said Sergeant Joe Munger, supervisor of the Ventura Police Special Victims' Unit. "With technology constantly evolving, we're committed to staying ahead of the risks and giving residents the tools they need to protect their families."

The presentation will be led by detectives from the Special Victims' Unit who regularly investigate internet-based crimes involving minors. A Q&A session will follow to address specific questions from attendees.

This workshop is intended for parents, guardians, and any adult responsible for the care of children, including grandparents, babysitters, and family friends. Due to the sensitive nature of the content, this event is for adults only. Please do not bring children.
